Commenting on reports that the government may claw-back the Regional Growth Fund budget as part of George Osborne’s £3bn of cuts, Pat Glass, Labour MP for North West Durham said:

“The Regional Growth Fund has been chaotic and inefficient throughout its entire existence. Money that should have been spent on boosting the North East economy and helping to create jobs has too often been tied up in Whitehall. It is deeply regrettable that money that could have been used to help our region’s economy grow is now likely to be clawed back by George Osborne. It sadly demonstrates what most of us feared, that for all the talk from the Chancellor of creating a Northern Powerhouse, all we’re actually seeing are empty words and cuts to funding.”

Shadow Business Secretary Chuka Umunna MP said:

“Ministers’ flagship Regional Growth Fund has been mired in confusion and delay, meaning that hundreds of millions of pounds have been left gathering dust in Whitehall instead of being put to use to boost growth across the country. As a result, too many areas are being held back and have missed out.”
