Angela Eagle MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills, responding to the announcement of the liquidation of SSI UK said:
“This is devastating news for the local community. It is shocking that the Government has chosen to turn its back on steelmaking on Teesside.
“The Government must explain why, when the industry has been in trouble for so long, they have allowed the situation to disintegrate into catastrophe.
“Whilst it is right the Government will provide some support for steelworkers and their families, their refusal to assist with mothballing the assets, threatens to end the possibility of steelmaking in the future.
“We stand side by side with the local community, and that is why John McDonnell and I will be travelling to Teesside on Monday to meet Anna Turley and other Teesside Labour MPs to listen to the steelworkers and their families and show our support.”
John McDonnell MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, said:
“It’s not good enough for George Osborne to stand aside and do nothing to preserve steel making on Teesside.
“The least the Government can do is provide the receiver with the resources to mothball the plant to secure its future potential.”
