CAMERON IS "OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE REALITY OF WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE IN CARLISLE"

Cllr Joe Hendry, CarlisleCommenting on David Cameron's visit to Carlisle today, Councillor Joe Hendry, Leader of Carlisle Labour Group said:

"David Cameron is simply out of touch with the reality of what is happening here in Carlisle and Cumbria.

"In the last year the number of young people out of work for more than 6 months in Carlisle has increased by 200%. Unemployment has increased by nearly 500 in this city since David Cameron entered Downing Street.

"I know that many parents across this city are worried about the future for their children who are just about to finish school or university.

"This government is complacent in the extreme and is not doing enough to tackle this growing jobs crisis for our young people. They are in danger of condemning a generation of Cumbria's young people to life on the dole.

"Labour’s jobs guarantee would ensure that any young person unemployed for more than 6 months would get a job or training to ensure we don’t lose them from the world of work. The Prime Minister should back our plan for jobs and growth which would see a temporary cut in VAT to help family finances, support for small business to take on extra workers and new affordable homes built."
