Carlisle MP Eric Martlew to retire at next Election

Eric MartlewEric Martlew, Labour’s MP for Carlisle has announced that he plans to retire from Parliament at the next General Election.

Mr Martlew made the announcement at a meeting of Carlisle Constituency Labour Party last night.

Eric Martlew said;

"Having been elected as a Councillor in 1972 and then as the Member of Parliament in 1987 I feel it is time to step down from front-line politics.”

"They say a week is a long time in politics and I've done coming up 40 years!,"
"Over this time I have given total commitment to my responsibilities but now feel its time to take things easier."

He continued:

"I am confident that given the good shape of the Carlisle Labour Party that we will return a Labour MP at the next election."

A spokesperson for Labour North said;

“The Labour Party will begin the selection procedure to choose a new candidate for Carlisle as soon as possible.”
