Caroline Flint - The PoplarsLabour’s Shadow Communities Secretary, Caroline Flint visited the west end of Newcastle today (Tuesday 19 April 2011) to hear from local residents who are angry at council plans to demolish tower blocks.

Last year, Lib Dem’s at Newcastle City Council decided to abandon the regeneration of the tower blocks half way through after a private sector partner pulled out. Five of the ten blocks, which dominate the skyline of Cruddas Park, have been completely refurbished but now the remaining five will be pulled down with no firm plans for replacement social housing in place.

Caroline Flint joined local Labour Councillor, Dipu Ahmed on a tour of estate, visiting residents in The Hawthorns; a refurbished block and meeting the final resident left in The Poplars.

Caroline Flint MP said;

“It’s a crying shame what’s happening here in Cruddas Park. The Lib Dems have been shilly-shallying for years about refurbishing these flats and now when they have no plan they say that these blocks are going to be demolished.

"That’s a shame for the local community and it’s a shame for providing social housing in this part of Newcastle.

“It’s another example of the incompetence of the Lib Dems on Newcastle City Council.”
