Tories still don’t care about the North - Campbell Alan Campbell MP

As Conservative Party members prepare to descend on Gateshead for their Spring Conference, a senior Tory MP has revealed their true feelings about the North.

During his interview with ePolitix, Shadow Health Minister Mike Penning said that the Tory party should concentrate on their own marginal seats and not constituencies in the North and the "Celtic Fringe"

Labour’s Alan Campbell , Member of Parliament for Tynemouth said;

"Mr Penning has let the cat out of the bag. The Tories still have no interest in the North East and their decision to hold their Spring Conference on Tyneside is no more than a hollow stunt.

People in the North East remember the devastation left behind by the last Tory government. The Tories still haven’t changed. They still stand for massive cuts in our public services and are willing to take big risks with the stability of the economy. They are the last thing our Region needs."

Asked whether the party should be looking to the Celtic fringe and the cities of the north he said: "I don't think so. I think we need to talk to people and explain to them what we stand for as a party again.

"Remember that we suffered the most serious electoral defeat in 1997 that this party has experienced in modern times and to come back from that has been a real struggle but what David Cameron has managed to do is secure our base and then move forward."
