DAVID CAMERON’S CUTS WOULD CRUSH OUR CHANCES OF SECURING A DECENT ECONOMIC RECOVERY - NICK BROWN

Responding to tonight's David Cameron’s interview with the BBC's Jeremy Paxman, where he targets the North East for public sector cuts, Nick Brown, Labour’s Minister for the North East said;

“His attack on the North East of England shows no understanding of the nature of the problems we face. We want a more diversified economy with a stronger private sector and that is what we are working very hard to achieve.”

“The public sector is crucial to bringing new private sector jobs to the region. David Cameron’s public spending cuts would set all this back and crush all of our chances of securing a decent economic recovery. He didn’t seem to care very much. What he is planning to do is very wrong."

Liam Byrne, Labour's Chief Secretary said;

"Tonight under Jeremy Paxman's scrutiny David Cameron couldn't give one example of where his savings would come from or where the departmental cuts would fall. And alarmingly for regions outside London, he claimed investment in the regions like the North East was unsustainable, while at the same time saying that tax cuts for millionaires were sustainable.

"With every passing day David Cameron's big society sounds more and more like the same old Tories -  tax cuts for the few at the expense of cuts to essential services and to our regions."
