Ed Miliband, Joe Hendry and Labour's candidates in CarlisleEd Miliband, Leader of the Labour Party joined Labour Party candidates in Carlisle on Monday to officially launch Labour’s local campaign in the region and unveil six pledges to the people of the City. Mr Miliband was visiting the Richard Rose Academy in Morton to take part in a question and answer session with Labour Party supporters.

Mr Miliband and Councillor Joe Hendry, Leader of Carlisle City Council Labour Group signed a giant pledge card setting out the party’s local campaign pledges.

The six pledges are:

1.    We voted to freeze Council Tax this year.  We will freeze it again next year.

2.    We will clean up Carlisle – We prioritised the budget to set up a ‘Hit Squad’ to deal with dog fouling, fly tipping, grot spots.

3.    We will drive forward economic growth.  By working with the County Council and business community in a growth recovery plan for new jobs and homes.

4.    We will manage our City’s assets wisely.  Our property, land and community facilities, and improve Botchergate.

5.    We will not waste your money.  The Tories wasted £8.9m of public money on Carlisle Renaissance.  £2.7m came directly from Carlisle Council Tax Payers.  That’s £77.00 for each Council Tax payer.

6.    We will work with partners to deliver an arts centre/ theatre and nurture Carlisle’s special heritage.
Launching the pledges, Councillor Joe Hendry said:

“Opposition is a long and frustrating haul.  We in Carlisle know that.  We have been in opposition to an incompetent Tory-LibDem coalition on Carlisle for 13 years.  But we haven’t stopped working or listening.

“We want to take this city of ours forward as a Knowledge City for the 21st Century.  At this time, Morton Academy must be the finest brand new secondary school in Britain.  It was built by a Labour Government.  It would not have happened without a Labour Government.  For the first time in 20 years, this school is completely subscribed.  By Carlisle youngsters who want to come to this school.

“We now have two secondary academies in Carlisle.  £20m spent on modernising Trinity secondary.  A fully modernised Carlisle College and a brand new University.  Carlisle now has the infrastructure and the education standards to be a dynamic forward looking 21st century knowledge city.  We need super fast broadband now.  And a Business Science Park with private sector investment.  And then watch this city take off!

“There is no more money.  In fact there will be less money.  But we are listening to the people of Carlisle.  We shall prioritise our resources.  We have six clear, realistic and practical pledges.

“We don’t do ‘smoke and mirrors’.  With the Labour party in Carlisle what you see is what you get. I ask the people of Carlisle to support us on 3rd May and we will again make Carlisle a city we can all be proud of.”
