Ed Miliband pays tribute to Dr Joe Hendry

Cllr Joe Hendry, Carlisle

Tributes have been paid to Councillor Dr Joe Hendry, Labour Leader of Carlisle City Council, who died after a short illness on Thursday.

Ed Miliband, Leader of the Labour Party said:

"I am deeply saddened by the death of Joe Hendry. I met Joe on several occasions and his passion and commitment to Carlisle and Cumbria always shone through. I know he was incredibly proud of the city he called his home and ambitious for its future.

"His love of the Labour Party was equally strong. He led Labour out of opposition after 13 years and since becoming Leader of the Council has worked hard to keep the promises he made to local people.

"His loss will be felt across the whole community. My thoughts are with Monica and his two sons at this sad time."

Councillor Colin Glover, Labour's Deputy Leader of Carlisle City Council said:

“Joe was immensely proud of his adopted City of Carlisle and his ambition for the future of the city was clear for everyone to see. He was particularly interested in creating opportunities for young people and giving them the best possible start in life. I saw Joe in hospital on Wednesday evening and he was bright and cheerful and seemed to be doing really well. The news has come as a huge shock to us and he will be greatly missed.

“Joe was first elected in 2003 and over the past 10 years he has earned the respect of a wide range of people. He kept a large pledge card in his office as a reminder to us all of the promises that had been made to the people of Carlisle. The finest tribute that we can pay to Joe is to make sure that those pledges are kept and his vision for the city is delivered. Our thoughts are with his wife Monica and the family at this sad time.”
