Anna Turley, Labour MP for Redcar, responding to the announcement that the government have appointed Lord Heseltine to chair a new inward investment programme for the Tees Valley, said:
“It shows total contempt for Teesside that the Tories have appointed a man who said it was a ‘good time’ for steelworkers to lose their jobs to this role.
“He was responsible for closing coal mines in the early nineties – very fitting he is to complete the job with the only remaining deep mine in the North East shedding jobs at Boulby.
“This is a desperate attempt to try and halt the failure of the Northern Powerhouse in the backyard of the Northern Powerhouse Minister. It’s recognition that it’s failing miserably on Teesside in the minister’s own region.”
