Jim Murphy meets "Rookie Builders" as Labour puts jobs in focus

Jim Murphy, Joe Hendry and Story Group ApprenticesShadow Cabinet Minister, Jim Murphy visited Carlisle on Monday as Labour put youth unemployment at the top of its agenda in the last week of campaigning for the local elections.

The Shadow Defence Secretary visited Story Group in Belle Vue with Leader of the Labour Group, Joe Hendry to speak to apprentices. Mr Murphy spoke with some of the stars of the ITV documentary "Rookie Builders" which charted the progress of young trainees building a house from scratch in Cumbria.

The visit took place as Labour highlighted the 200% increase in long-term youth unemployment in the City. Labour has pledged to come forward with a plan for jobs in Carlisle if they win control on Thursday.

Earlier in the day Mr Murphy joined Councillor Stewart Young, Leader of the Cumbria County Council Labour Group to meet unions from Longtown Munitions Depot. The depot is threatened with closure by the Tory-led government with the loss of 300 jobs.

Jim Murphy promised to take Longtown's case back to Parliament saying:

"I’ve spoken to some of the people who talk about the high skill and dedication the workforce have.

“They shouldn’t have to pay the price for the Government’s ill-considered defence review.”
