Labour highlights importance of defence industry to North East economy

Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary Jim Murphy is today (Thursday 3 February) visiting the region to highlight the value of the defence industry to the North East’s economy.

Mr Murphy will visit CAV Aerospace in Consett and Astrum in Weardale, County Durham as part of the Labour Party’s policy review into defence procurement.

Jim Murphy said;

“A strong UK defence industry is crucial so that our troops have the best possible support. It is also important as part of a comprehensive plan for growth as so many jobs depend on it.  It is great to be back in the North East to see how the defence industry contributes to the regional economy and how these companies’ innovations support our defence policy.

“The UK must be at the cutting edge of high-tech manufacturing and I will use my visit to inform my work on defence procurement policy. I want to establish how we can better support national security needs through a stronger, sustainable UK industrial base.

“So far this Government has demonstrated no plan for economic growth in the UK. I hope they will act fast – it’s in all our interests.”
