Labour Party members in Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland have today selected Tom Blenkinsop as their candidate for the forthcoming General Election.

Mr Blenkinsop, hopes to succeed Ashok Kumar MP, who sadly died in March.

Tom Blenkinsop was born and raised in Marton, Middlebrough and currently lives Saltburn. Aged 29, he is currently an official for the steel union Community and has played a leading role in the “Save Our Steel” campaign to save the Corus Teesside Cast Products plant.

After the selection, Tom Blenkinsop said;

“As a local man brought up in Marton, and now living in Saltburn, it’s an absolute honour to be selected by my friends. Over the next few weeks I’ll be working every single day, knocking doors to earn support of my community. I hope I am able to win the seat for Labour and that I’m able to serve it as well as Ashok did.”

Joan Guy, Chair of Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland CLP said;

“I am delighted. In Tom we can see the future of the Labour Party. I am confident we can retain the seat with Tom as our candidate as he someone who has his finger on the local pulse.”

Vera Baird QC, Labour's MP for Redcar said;

“This is fantastic news. In Tom we have a young local lad who underwent his political upbringing learning from Ashok Kumar. I know that Ashok would have been very pleased. Tom is a Labour person through and through who has campaigned hard for the future of steel on Teesside. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

Michael J. Leahy OBE, General Secretary of Community Union said:

"Having someone who has worked day-in-day-out to defend the Teesside Steelworks selected as a Parliamentary Candidate will keep up the pressure to Save Our Steel.

"Tom Blenkinsop will make a great MP - born is Middlesbrough, he and his wife live in East Cleveland. He once worked for Ashok Kumar and now serves steelworkers at TCP.

"Ashok Kumar was a great MP, he is sorely missed by one and all. Tom now has a job on his hands to secure his legacy - the people of Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland voting Labour is the best way to do that.

"The union's loss is Middlesbrough South & East Cleveland's gain."
