The Labour Party has a proud history and tradition in the North. Parts of the North Region have been represented by Labour MPs for over a 100 years with some of the party's founding father's representing seats in the region. Famous Labour names such as Arthur Henderson, Margaret Bondfield, Ellen Wilkinson, Manny Shinwell all represented North East seats.
The North East was also to play a symbolic period in the Party's recent history. For many Sedgefield was seen as one of the birthplaces of the party's revival which saw the party swept to power in 1997. The County Durham seat was the home to Tony Blair, who was to become Labour Leader in 1994 and Prime Minister in 1997, winning three general election victories for the Party. Tony Blair announced his intention to resign as Prime Minister in 2007 and was succeed by Gordon Brown. He also stood down as MP for Sedgefield in 2007 being succeeded in a byelection by Phil Wilson MP.
