"Lord Glenamara demonstrated an unstinting commitment to public services" - Ed Miliband

Ed MilibandEd Miliband MP, Leader of the Labour Party, commenting on the death of former Newcastle MP and Cabinet Minister, Lord Glenamara, said:

"I’m deeply saddened to hear of the death of Lord Glenamara.

"Throughout his long and distinguished career, Lord Glenamara demonstrated an unstinting commitment to public services. After leaving the army at the end of the Second World War he became a teacher in Newcastle where he developed a passion for education that would last throughout his political career.

"For more than sixty years, he was a dedicated servant of the Labour Party and the British people. As Secretary of State for Education, he played an important role in expanding access to higher education.

"Our thoughts go to his family at this time. He will be missed by his friends and colleagues from across the Labour Party"
