Responding to George Osborne’s visit to the North East region, Catherine McKinnell, Labour MP for Newcastle North and Shadow Treasury Minister said:
“The Tories so-called plan is failing and it isn’t working in the North East where most people are £1160 worse off after five years of David Cameron. 144,000 working families in this region have seen their tax credits cut in real terms. The number of apprenticeships is falling and our local councils are being hit disproportionately hard when compared to more affluent areas of the country.
“We need a better plan, one based on guaranteeing young people an apprenticeship if they get the grades, cutting and freezing business rates for our 71,000 small businesses, and a plan that gives our exporters the certainty they need to invest with a promise to stay in a reformed EU. Only Labour has that better plan for prosperity in the North East.”
