There’s a new Sherriff in town!

Lee SherriffLabour select local mum Lee as candidate for Carlisle

Carlisle mum of three, Lee Sherriff has been selected by members of the Carlisle Labour Party to be their candidate at the next General Election.

The announcement followed a ballot of members today at a hustings meeting at Tullie House in the city centre.

Lee, aged 39, is a former retail worker and is currently a City Councillor for Harraby ward.

After the announcement, Lee Sherriff said:

“I’m honoured to have been chosen by Labour Party members to be their candidate at the next General Election. I’ve lived in Carlisle since childhood. It’s my home and I would never have considered standing anywhere else.

“Across Carlisle thousands of families are struggling because of the decisions made by this Tory-led government. Their economic policies have been disaster for this city. They have shown that they have the wrong priorities. An average family in Carlisle will be over £500 worse off this year because of their tax changes and long term youth unemployment has soared.

“At the same time, this government has prioritised a tax cut for millionaires. Between now and the next general election I will be campaigning hard to hold our Tory MP to account for the wrong decisions his party are making.

“I know that Labour need to do more to gain the trust of local people. Since the last general election we have been out listening to people and that helped us win back the City Council earlier this year. But we shouldn’t stop there; we need to continue to talk with the people of Carlisle about the issues that matter to them and how we can deliver a fairer and better place to live.  I can guarantee that I will be continuing to do that over the coming months and years before the next General Election. I can’t wait to get started!”

Councillor Heather Bradley from Carlisle Constituency Labour Party said:

“I would like to congratulate Lee on her selection as our candidate. I’d also like to thank all the other short-listed candidates for taking part. In Lee Sherriff we have a great candidate who I know will make a great MP for Carlisle. We look forward to campaigning alongside her to ensure Carlisle has a Labour Member of Parliament again after the next General Election.”
