The aim of Labour North’s Training programme is to help members and local parties, build up their local organisation, reach out into local communities and campaign to win elections.

Launching this autumn, our training programme is designed to ensure that all Labour members can play their part in building local parties that are campaign ready, outward facing, open and in touch with the needs of every local community that we seek to represent.

All training events are free, and are based on best practice. They will be delivered by training professionals, organisers and experienced campaigners and is open to all members.  With sessions for designed for those wanting to get more involved for the first time, to sessions designed for advanced campaigners, there is something for everyone.

Local Election Candidate Training
Saturday 13th October | 9:30am – 2pm | Teesside
This session includes everything a candidate needs to know about the local elections next year; there will be an opportunity to learn about designing your campaign, a practical campaigning session and best practice tips and an overview of legal advice.

How to run a local government candidate shortlisting and selection meeting

This session includes practical considerations, a model agenda and an overview of the relevant Labour Party rules.

Confident Doorstep Conversations
Thursday 25th October | 6 – 8pm | Newcastle
A volunteer led session participatory session on the ins and outs of being a Labour activist, and how to balance that with work, life and keeping your non-political friends.
Drawing on research from social psychology, they’ll get the group to crowdsource solutions to everyday problems we face as Labour activists, from dealing with tricky questions to understanding why campaigning is for life, not just for elections.
Their underlying message is all about sustainable activism: if it’s enjoyable, people will make time to do it.

Forward Campaign Planning
Monday 29th October | 10am – 1pm | Newcastle

Every seat needs to be campaign ready and fully prepared for an election. This session will cover everything you need from the start of the short campaign to polling day itself.
This session will include;

  • How to campaign as an incumbent MP/councillor
  • How to engage your members
  • A guide to using Campaign Creator and Insight
  • Targeting and analysis of your constituency

This session is a continuation of the community organising programme, and will cover building winnable campaigns and winning in between elections.

 Effective Message and Media Training
Monday 12th November|10am – 1pm| Newcastle
When it comes to elections, your campaigns, and how you put this to the public can be the difference between winning and losing. This session will explore how to identify and create an effective message for your local area, as well as the best ways to get that message out to the public, including using the press.

Membership Training; Role Holder Training, Recruitment and Retention in your CLP
Thursday 22nd November | 6pm – 8pm | Durham
Designed to help you build a strong team of members in your area by integrating recruitment and retention into all your activity, this practical session will cover who to target, writing effective emails, arranging a first meeting with a new member and what materials are available to you.

New Members Event & Social
Thursday 13th December| 6 – 8pm | Newcastle
So you have joined the Labour Party and you’re not quite sure what to do next?
This is the session for you. Whether you want to get active in your area, offer up any specialist skills, become a Member of Parliament or anything in between, this session can help you get there. It’s also a great chance to get to know other new members in the region. Join us afterwards for a new member social with mince pies and mulled wine.

Target your campaigns
Thursday 17th January |6pm – 8pm | Newcastle
Come and learn how to run data-driven, targeted campaigns and better understand voters in your constituency. Insight is Labour’s new targeting and reporting tool which shows interactive visualisations of key stats and summaries of data on electors in your area. It can help you decide where to campaign, enable a better understanding of local demographics and help you track your contact rates. We will show you how this information can be used with Contact Creator and other campaign technology tools to run your campaign as effectively as possible.

Effective Print
Monday 21st January | 10am – 1pm | Newcastle
Print is one of the main ways we get our message out to the electorate, and it’s the biggest area of spend election spend, as well as being a logistical challenge.

This session will include;

  • How to put together a print plan for your CLP both for the 2018 local
  • Elections and for the next General Election, whenever it comes. Includes guidance on timetabling, budgeting and print in the short campaign
  • Campaign Creator
  • Targeting with Direct Mail and Self Mailers
  • How to write good leaflet and direct mail copy

Campaigning as a councillor / council candidate

Have you been selected as a council candidate, or are you re-standing as a councillor in the local elections? Then this session is for you. It will cover how to identify your campaign message and how to effectively campaign as a candidate, as well as sharing best practice and tips with other councillors and candidates.

Contact Creator Training

If you have never used Contact Creator before, or need a refresh, this practical session is for you. We cover everything from what is Contact Creator and how to log on to inputting data and searching for voters.

Campaigning with Social Media and an Introduction to Promote

Promote is the Labour Party’s new digital advertising tool, designed to help Labour activists campaign effectively on social media and integrate that into the rest of their campaigning online and offline. Come along and find out why we’ve built Promote, how you can use it in your campaigns, and how you and your local party can get your message across Facebook and other social media.

Organise Training
Thursday 21st February | 6pm – 8pm | Newcastle
Organise is the Labour Party’s new bespoke membership mobilisation and communication tool. This session is for new users to get set up and feel comfortable using this system. The session will give new users further knowledge of using Organise and an outlet to ask any questions about the new system.
